The X-Files I think did this perfect till they had Scully and Mulder hooking up.

It's the only TV show that I can think of that shows that men and women can work together, live together and have a deep platonic friendship without shoving sex into the story to muck everything up. Watson (Lucy Liu) and Sherlock (Jonny Lee Miller) would never have a romantic or sexual relationship. One of the reasons I like the TV show “Elementary” is they have been clear from the beginning that Dr.

And the example I gave, it would be a good book without the romance! It is so forced that it makes me think that Rebecca Ross thought, "Okay, so, I have characters, a cohesive story, a setting, and, oh wait I don't have a romantic subplot so I better grab this random dude and somehow add some!"įeel free to talk about it below, and if there is any YA fiction without a romantic subplot that you know of (preferably fantasy), please let me know. But, if you take away the romance, The Queen's Rising is a pretty good book, by my standards.īesides (a lot, at least) middle grade fiction or movies/TV shows aimed for kids, there always seems to be one romantic subplot in everything. There's some subtle hints throughout the book about it, but no more. I'm sorry, I thought you only had unrequited crushes on teachers, NOT ACTUAL RELATIONSHIPS. Like, old enough for it to be kind of weird and creepy, especially since HE'S HER F'ING TEACHER.

I'm sorry, but that seems borderline too old. On another note, our protagonist is 18, and the love interest is 8 YEARS OLDER THAN HER. The story ends with them making out randomly for no reason. So, basically it totally comes out of nowhere, with no development at all. And luckily the true queen was NOT our protagonist, which I was happy about. The court intrigue, everything about was good. One of the best examples of this is this book: It seems as if authors through them in there as if it's a necessary requirement in the criteria of a story. Because EVERY GODDAMN STORY ON THIS PLANET EARTH has to have a romantic subplot and probably some NSFW or else it's not a story. Okay, I wouldn't mind if the only stories with romantic subplots were ones that were actually there for the PLOT and actually WELL DEVELOPED, but no.
